Kathmandu — TikTok has rolled out a brand-new AI-powered feature called ‘AI Alive’, designed to transform still photos into dynamic short videos. Launched on Tuesday, the tool allows users to bring life to static images, all within the TikTok app’s Story feature.
Using AI animation, TikTok’s new tool can convert any photo into a visually engaging clip that looks digitally alive. The company showcased an example video, demonstrating how a simple photo was animated based on its content — turning it into a realistic, almost life-like short video.
“A picture speaks a thousand words — and with AI Alive, we’re taking visual storytelling to the next level,” TikTok said. “Creators can now animate their photos with ease and craft even more compelling stories for their communities.”
How it works:
To try it out, users can:
-
Tap on the Story option within the TikTok app.
-
Open the camera and choose any photo.
-
Select the ‘AI Alive’ feature from the right-hand options.
-
Add a prompt explaining the type of video you want from that image.
The AI will then generate a video clip based on the prompt and the selected image. The result? A personalized, animated video that feels fresh and interactive.
While similar animation filters have existed on platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, TikTok has now launched this as a dedicated AI tool, making it more advanced and flexible.
The company, however, notes that results may vary. Sometimes, the animations are strikingly realistic — but there may be occasional glitches like unnatural facial expressions or awkward body shapes.
TikTok is confident the feature will meet creators’ needs and make storytelling easier and more creative. Interestingly, Instagram is also reportedly working on a similar feature through its ‘Edits’ app, seen as a rival to TikTok’s AI offering.
AI Alive is now rolling out globally — though the company hasn’t confirmed when all users will have access.
