Kathmandu – Microsoft is developing its own AI model to compete with OpenAI. According to The Information, the company plans to sell these AI models to developers.
Microsoft, which has heavily invested in OpenAI, currently uses OpenAI’s models in its Copilot feature. However, the company is now testing AI models from Elon Musk’s xAI, Meta, and DeepSeek to reduce its reliance on OpenAI, Reuters reported.
Introducing ‘MAI’ – Microsoft’s New AI Model
Under the leadership of Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s AI division has nearly completed the development of its new AI model, named ‘MAI’. Reports suggest that MAI’s performance is expected to match that of OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s models.
Microsoft is also training the model using Chain-of-Thought (CoT) technology, which enhances logical reasoning and problem-solving. This approach allows AI to generate more thoughtful responses, making it a strong competitor to OpenAI’s models.
MAI to Replace OpenAI in Microsoft Products
Suleyman’s team is experimenting with replacing OpenAI’s models in Copilot with MAI models. Microsoft plans to release MAI as an API by the end of this year, allowing developers to integrate it into their own applications.
With this move, Microsoft is positioning itself as a direct competitor to OpenAI, aiming for greater independence in the AI market.
