Lalitpur, March 18 – A national dialogue on business and human rights was successfully held in Nepal, bringing together key stakeholders, including the government, national human rights institutions, the private sector, civil society organizations, and international development partners. The event focused on accelerating the implementation of Nepal’s National Action Plan (NAP) on Business and Human Rights.

Discussions revolved around responsible business practices, ethical supply chains, corporate accountability, regulatory frameworks, and the government’s role in promoting human rights-friendly business operations.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Sukuntalal Hirachan, Vice President of the National Business Initiative (NBI), emphasized the need for collaboration to overcome challenges and ensure businesses uphold human rights. “Today’s dialogue helps us identify challenges, explore innovative solutions, and learn from best practices. Business success cannot be separated from its broader social impact,” he stated.

Attorney General Ramesh Badal, the keynote speaker, stressed that businesses cannot progress while ignoring human dignity. “Protecting and promoting human rights is not just the government’s responsibility; the private sector also plays a crucial role,” he noted.

The second session featured a high-level panel discussion with government officials, representatives from the National Human Rights Commission, the United Nations, business leaders, and trade unions. The discussion highlighted the importance of integrating human rights into business operations, aligning with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The panel emphasized that the private sector must take a decisive role in promoting responsible business conduct.

Mr. Christophe Bahuet, Deputy Regional Director for Asia-Pacific at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), shared insights on how businesses can incorporate human rights into their strategies, drawing from global best practices. He also stressed the need for multi-stakeholder engagement for effective implementation.

Swiss Ambassador Dr. Daniel Muli and EU Ambassador to Nepal Ms. Véronique Lorenzo also shared their perspectives on global standards, corporate responsibility, and the role of multilateral cooperation in promoting business and human rights.

Addressing the event, Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Mr. Sharat Singh Bhandari, emphasized Nepal’s commitment to integrating human rights into business practices. “A multi-stakeholder approach, strong accountability, and commitment from both public and private sectors are crucial for aligning Nepal’s business landscape with global human rights standards,” he stated. He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to working with stakeholders at all levels to implement the action plan effectively.

In his closing remarks, NBI President Mr. Kush Kumar Joshi highlighted that businesses can thrive while respecting human rights. “By embedding human rights as a fundamental principle, we can create an environment where businesses grow, communities prosper, and rights are protected for all,” he said. He also reaffirmed the private sector’s commitment to fair labor practices, environmental protection, empowering marginalized groups, engaging stakeholders, and maintaining transparency and accountability.

The event saw strong participation from NBI executive members and representatives from the private sector, reflecting a collective commitment to responsible business practices in Nepal.
