New York – The Consulate General of Nepal in New York, in collaboration with Genese Solution, organised a special Tech Dialogue with Diaspora on Friday, bringing together Nepali and Nepali-origin US tech professionals and innovators.

The event, themed “Tech Forward: Uniting Diaspora Talent to Power Nepal’s Digital Leap”, highlighted the importance of a structured Tech Dialogue with Diaspora to promote Nepal as an emerging global tech hub.

This first-of-its-kind Tech Dialogue with Diaspora in New York aimed to strengthen connections, encourage collaboration, and explore opportunities for Nepal’s digital growth through global expertise and innovation.

Strengthening Nepal Tech -Diaspora Tech Collaboration

Addressing the participants, Mr. Dadhiram Bhandari, Consul General of Nepal in New York, said the purpose of the dialogue was to open communication channels, gather innovative ideas, and strengthen Nepal’s position in the global technology landscape.

“IT services export has brought us a historic moment, replacing labour export with knowledge export,” said Mr. Bhandari. “The government is embracing reforms, has introduced an AI policy, and is updating the Digital Nepal Framework 2.0. With no cap on FDI in IT and incentives for companies, the diaspora’s expertise can significantly strengthen Nepal’s economy.”

He emphasized that the consulate’s mandate includes promoting Nepal’s IT potential and building strong Nepal-US commercial partnerships.

Making a presentation on “Diaspora Lens: Driving Nepal’s Digital Future,” Mr. Mahesh Phuyal, Founder & CEO of Genese Solution, highlighted the company’s efforts in helping Nepali embassies worldwide promote Nepal as a tech destination.

“Nepali diaspora can play the role of a bridge between global expertise and local needs,” he said. “With policy changes and the establishment of a large IT Park under a Special Economic Zone, there is enormous potential for collaboration between Nepali and diaspora professionals.”

Mr. Phuyal, also an AWS Ambassador, urged Nepali tech professionals to share challenges from their domains, nominate diaspora champions to lead innovation clusters, and collaborate with enterprises and startups to power Nepal’s digital leap.

Insights from Tech Leaders

Several diaspora tech leaders shared their perspectives during the panel:

  • Mr. Prasanna Dhungel, Managing Partner at GrowbyData, shared his journey of launching a company in the US with Nepali talent. “If you have the right culture and manage people well, it’s doable,” he said, stressing the importance of providing value to both clients and communities.

  • Mr. Anish Joshi, Head of Tech at Fusemachines Inc, highlighted the abundance of Nepali talent. “Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Proper training and exposure to the global market are essential to unlock Nepal’s potential,” he said.

Panelists agreed that Nepal must focus on skills, culture, technology, and infrastructure while fostering partnerships among government, industry, and academia to strengthen its digital ecosystem.
