KATHMANDU- The Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) has reported that around two dozen hotels across the country sustained heavy damage during the ongoing Gen Z protests, with total losses estimated at over Rs 25 billion.
According to HAN, the Hilton Hotel in Kathmandu alone suffered damages exceeding Rs 8 billion. Incidents of vandalism, arson, and looting were recorded at several well-known domestic and international brand hotels in Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara, Butwal, Bhairahawa, Jhapa, Biratnagar, Dhangadhi, Mahottari, and Dang-Tulsipur, among other areas.
The association warned that many affected hotels will be unable to resume operations without extensive repair and reconstruction, potentially putting the jobs of more than 2,000 workers at risk.
In its statement, HAN also expressed concern that the damaged hotels may fail to meet their financial obligations to banks and other institutions. It called for the formation of a powerful judicial committee to investigate the destruction, ensure punishment for the perpetrators, and introduce fair compensation measures.
Furthermore, HAN urged the government to announce an economic relief package to support repair and reconstruction efforts. The association emphasized that restoring investor confidence is vital to protect Nepal’s tourism development and maintain overall economic stability.
