Kathmandu — Nepali filmmaker Jason Lopchan, known for directing an entire feature film using an iPhone 14 Pro Max, has been awarded a full scholarship by the Asian Film School (AFiS) in Busan, South Korea.
Lopchan gained international attention with his film A Place Under the Sun, shot entirely on a smartphone. Recognizing his creative approach and innovative use of mobile filmmaking, AFiS selected him as a fellow under its International Film Business Academy (IFBA) program, supported by the Busan Metropolitan City.
The eight-month intensive training began on March 24 and covers tuition, accommodation, airfare, and health insurance. Lopchan will receive specialized training in film production during his stay.
“Over the next eight months here in Busan, I’ll focus on scripting and development work,” Lopchan told Techpana. “If all goes well, I plan to shoot my next film in Nepal by 2026.”
A graduate of Oscar College with a degree in film direction and screenwriting, Lopchan also completed his master’s at Shepherd College of Media and Technology. He previously directed Nepal’s version of Crime Patrol, aired on Galaxy 4K TV.
‘A Place Under the Sun’ is currently available on international platforms like Apple TV and Amazon Prime, as well as on Nepal’s MSM Video OTT service.
