Kathmandu – Italian tech company Moltiply Group has filed a massive €2.97 billion ($3.34 billion) lawsuit against Google, accusing the tech giant of misusing its dominant position in the online market.
Moltiply owns Trovaprezzi.it — a popular price comparison site in Italy — and claims that Google unfairly promoted its own service, Google Shopping, between 2010 and 2017. As a result, Moltiply says its subsidiary 7Pixel was held back from growing.
The case has been filed in a Milan court, though specific legal details haven’t been released yet. Google’s local spokesperson in Italy declined to comment on the matter.
This legal battle stems from a wider EU case. Back in 2017, the European Commission fined Google €2.42 billion for giving its shopping service an unfair boost in search results. Google lost its final appeal against that fine in September 2023.
Moltiply’s lawsuit builds on that EU ruling, arguing that Google’s actions directly harmed competition and caused major financial damage.
