Kathmandu – Leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD Auto Industry Company Limited has announced a major initiative to improve battery recycling and reuse. Marking Global Recycling Day, the company reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability by partnering with two major battery recycling firms.
As the demand for electric vehicles grows worldwide, proper management of used batteries has become a priority. To tackle this challenge, BYD has signed agreements with:
- IT Asset Partners (USA, California)
- Anhui Lecheng Lithium-Ion Technology (China, Wuhu City)
The agreement, signed on May 28, 2024, ensures that lithium-ion batteries used in BYD electric vehicles are safely and efficiently recycled.
How the Recycling Process Works
The battery recycling process will follow international environmental standards:
- Capacity Testing: Used batteries will be tested to determine if they can be reused.
- Material Extraction: Batteries that cannot be reused will be carefully dismantled to extract valuable raw materials such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt.
- Sustainable Processing: These extracted materials will be sent to designated processing centers for reuse, ensuring an eco-friendly approach to battery disposal.
Sustainability in Nepal’s EV Market
Nepal has seen a significant rise in the adoption of electric vehicles, making proper battery disposal and recycling essential for sustainability. BYD’s initiative aligns with Nepal’s sustainable development goals, ensuring that EV batteries do not become an environmental burden.
BYD’s Commitment to Sustainability
Sahil Shrestha, CEO of Cimex Inc. (BYD’s official distributor in Nepal), stated:
“Sustainability is not just about producing EVs; responsible recycling at every stage is crucial. BYD remains committed to integrating environmental protection into every aspect of its EV ecosystem.”
With this initiative, BYD is strengthening its global commitment to sustainability while addressing the challenges of battery disposal and reuse in the growing EV market.
